A method for cleansing a filter bed having a backwash pump having an inlet and outlet line comprises (a) backwashing the bed for initially removing contaminants from the bed, the backwash pump drawing liquid from an effluent channel, and (b) purging the bed by the recirculation of a first purging portion of liquid pumped by the pump on the outlet line through the backwash shoe for return to the pump through the inlet line.
