PURPOSE:To enable a paper jam to be detected being distinguished from another jam by providing a detecting means which detects the winding of a sheet of paper around a sensitive body from the output signal of a means of detecting the surface potential of the rotating sensitive body. CONSTITUTION:A surface potential detecting means 3 detects the surface potential of a sensitive body 2 which is electrified in a defined potential and which is rotated while holding image information to be transferred to a sheet of paper 1 on its outer peripheral face. The sheet of paper is conveyed while being in contact with the outer peripheral face of the sensitive body by a paper conveying means 4. A paper winding jam detecting means 5 which detects the winding of the sheet of paper around the sensitive body from the output signal of the surface potential detecting means carries out indication while simultaneously stopping paper conveyance. Thus, since the paper winding jam is surely recognized being distinguished from the jams of other causes, no erroneous handling will be carried out without causing unexpected trouble to the device.
