PURPOSE:To obtain an electroviscous fluid producing greater shear stress at the same voltage or current and capable of improving the reliability of the operation of various actuators by dispersing dielectric particles including at most a specified amount of fine particles having a particle diameter below a specified value in a liquid excellent in electrical insulating properties. CONSTITUTION:An electroviscous fluid made by dispersing dielectric particles in a liquid excellent in electrical insulating properties (e.g. a silicone oil such as dimethyl silicone, a mineral oil such as isodecane, or a natural oil such as castor oil), wherein said particles (e.g. silica particles) include at most 10vol.%, based on total particles, fine particles having a particle diameter of 1mum or smaller. This electroviscous fluid exhibits a much higher electroviscous effect, producing greater shear stress at the same voltage or current than those conventionally used, and is capable of improving the reliability of the operation of various actuators. |
