The invention relates to a method of reducing the running time of flame-cutting machines during the successive working of workpieces or a workpiece, with at least one tool which during the working is arranged at a working location of a workpiece, from which it is traversed to a working location of a following workpiece or of the same workpiece with a horizontal movement and a vertical movement away from the workpiece. In order to reduce the times for the vertical movement of the tool, this vertical movement is restricted to a level below the top end position of the tool. Upon reaching the position of the following working location, the tool is traversed from this level to a predetermined distance from the workpiece.
