The tool clamping device is for a machine tool which may have either a manual or an automatic tool changing system. The tool (6) has a tapered shank (5) which fits in a matching bore in the tool holder (2). The tool shank (5) has an axial bore which fits over the support pin (3) which is retained by a hollow bolt. The tool (6) is clamped in the tool holder by a clamping element which fits in a radial hole in the tool (6). The support pin (3) has a specially shaped slot (7) which extends axially from the end face (8). The clamping element (14) has an integrally formed cam (15) which engages the walls of the slot (7) so that an axial clamping force is exerted on the tool (6).
