PURPOSE: To forcibly remove chips from a workpiece by providing a cutting blade to be generated due to the transition between an upper surface and a side surface on a cutting insert for a chip forming machine comprising a polygonal body, and arranging an upper rake surface inside the cutting blade. CONSTITUTION: This insert 10 consists of ceramics, cemented carbide alloy, or a hard material similar thereto. The insert 10 includes an upper surface 11 and a lower surface 12 of the same shape. The upper and lower surfaces 11, 12 are connected to each other through side surfaces 13-16 arranged therebetween. Cutting blades 17-20 are respectively generated by the transition of the outer circumference between the upper surface 11 and the side surfaces 13-16 and between the lower surface 12 and the side surfaces. The side surfaces 13-16 are intersected with each other along a round corner 21. The corner 21 is regulated by a bisector B. The upper and lower surfaces are provided with a recessed surface 22 which is inclined downwardly inside of a ridge 23 and its corner area. Each ridge 23 is extended in a direction orthogonal to the side surfaces 13-16 to return chips. |
