A lubricating oil compsn. comprises (i) as base oil, a mineral oil contg. no more than 30 wt.% aromatics and/or a synthetic oil contg. no aromatic rings in the structural units, and (ii) 0.01-5.0 wt.% of an N-p-alkylphenyl-alpha naphthylamine of formula (I) [R= C12-15 branched alkyl derived from a propylene oligomer, pref. branched dodecyl or branched pentadecyl . The compsn. may be an engine oil, including a diesel engine oil, gear oil, cylinder oil or metal working oil.
