<p>Counterflow mild gasification process and apparatus (1) employing reverse combustion, with a carbonaceous reactant (11), which may be a solid fossil fuel or solid biological waste. The solid carbonaceous material (11) fills an elongated combustion chamber (10) where it is ignited (12) creating an advancing combustion front (13). An oxidant (15), usually air or pure oxygen, is introduced such that it flows in a direction opposite the advance of the combustion front (13). This reverse flow of the oxidant (15) allows for only partial combustion of the solid carbonaceous material (11) and at mild temperatures, resulting in a high quality hydrocarbon gaseous product (6) and a solid coke.</p> |
