The invention proposes a drive device for a rolling surface (10), e.g. a rolling shutter, a covering, a rolling shutter door, a rolling grille or the like, which is provided with a winding shaft (11) for winding up the rolling surface (10) and with at least one cable (17, 17') which acts on the free end, of the rolling surface (10), facing away from the winding shaft (11) and which is guided over at least one deflection device (22, 23) to a winding pulley (16), at least some of the cable running between the free end of the rolling surface (10) and its end position in the unwound state of the rolling surface (10). In the event of an opposite winding direction of rolling surface (10) and cable (17, 17'), the winding shaft (11) and the winding pulley (16) are connected to one another in a rotationally fixed manner at least during the winding procedure. The extensible cable (17) is elastically prestressed. Consequently, a common drive of winding shaft (11) and winding pulley (16) is possible in a simple manner, with the result that it is possible to install the arrangement in all positions for various types of rolling surfaces. The elastic cable (17) compensates for the different cable speeds of the cable region fastened on the rolling surface and of the cable region in the region of the winding pulley (16). <IMAGE>
