The control system has a first (12) and second (14) channel which simultaneously monitor and control engine operation. The first channel receives a set of inputs (22) and processes (26, 46, 32) the inputs to form a first rate signal (34). The second channel also receives the same set of inputs (22) and processes the inputs (56, 76, 62) to form a second rate signal (64). The first and second rate signal are coupled to a means (36) for combining the signals and the output is coupled to a common integrator (38) which activates an actuator (40) of the engine. The engine is monitored (42, 72) to provide monitor signals (44, 74) which are fed back to processors (46, 76) of the channels (12, 14). The sets of inputs (22) for the channels may be derived from respective duplicated sets of sensors. The system may be used to control a fuel metering valve, the position of which is monitored (at 42, 72). The provision of two control loops (12, 14) ensures against failure.
