Continuous coke oven is divided into three zones. A first direct heating zone with burners has a flue gas outlet at the charging end. The following radiator heated zone has several coke oven gas outlets in the ceiling. A second direct heating zone has a flue gas outlet at the discharging end. The burners in zones 1 and 3 are operated with a small excess air ratio. Steam is supplied to the radiator zone. A wire mesh belt on rollers takes the ovoid coal briquettes through the oven. This supplies highquality coke oven gas separate from the flue gases of zones 1 and 3. The steam supply prevents premature carburizing of wire mesh belt, rollers and radiator tubes.
