The refrigerator comprises an assembly defining space to be cooled, an evaporator for cooling the space and a compressor for providing refrigerant to the evaporator. A mechanism is provided for defrosting the evaporator along with a device for producing a defrost signal at predetermined times. The temperature in the space is sensed and a refrigerating signal is produced accordingly. A circuit is provided for operating the compressor to cool the space in response to the rapid cooling signal, the refrigerating signal or the defrosting signal, and for operating the defrosting mechanism and stopping the compressor a predetermined time after the defrost signal when the rapid colling signal is not produced to precool the space.
