In the manufacture of metallic workpieces, a sealing protective layer for the surface is frequently required. However, before this protective layer is applied, cleaning or removal of layers of the surface is carried out. In this case, halogenated hydrocarbon-containing cleaning agents provide good service, but their value is reduced by the incompleteness of the cleaning and by the risk to the environment. The invention discloses a process and a device which detaches the halogenated hydrocarbon-containing cleaning agents in a fluidised bed (2) in a blasting gas atmosphere from the surfaces of the workpieces (1) and converts them into gaseous constituents. The outlet mixture at the exit of the fluidised bed (2) can then be separated by means of filters into non-polluting, pure and re-usable substances. Such a process with the associated device can be used from cleaning of a clip to removal of a layer from a car wheel rim, such that there is a wide field for the application. <IMAGE>
