The new washing apparatus consists of, for example, two washing units, each preferably with a screen drum, through which the washing liquid flows from the outside inwards. The screen drum can also be replaced by a normal deflecting roller. Arranged above the screen drums are two additional deflecting rollers, around which the textile material is looped in a meander-shaped manner. In order to increase the dwell time, the first of the deflecting rollers is arranged higher than the second, and the second is surrounded by a trough, so that the liquid running off is caught in this trough and therefore the textile material is wetted completely by the washing liquid in the region of the lower deflecting roller. After the textile material has run off from this lower deflecting roller, the textile material runs upwards to the finally discharging deflecting roller and then, if appropriate, into a squeezing device or to a further washing apparatus. The 100% implementation of the countercurrent washing process is advantageous in this washing machine.
