In known pneumatically operated brake systems for multi axle vehicles brake pressure control devices are used, which are of comparatively expensive design. According to the invention a pressure control valve (3) which supplies at least the brake cylinders (5) of the driving axle and possibly also the brake cylinders (8) of a leading axle or a trailing axle with compressed air is used in a pneumatically operated brake system for road vehicles with air suspension. The control pressure of the pressure control valve (3) is the maximum air suspension bellows pressure of the driving axle or the driving axle including leading axle or a trailing axle.
