The novel polythiophenes contain structural units of the formula

in which
A is an optionally substituted C1-C4-alkylene radical,
and are prepared by oxidative polymerisation of the corresponding thiophenes and are used for the antistatic finishing of substrates which conduct electrical current poorly or not at all, in particular plastic mouldings, and as an electrode material for rechargeable batteries.
