A telescopic spring counterbalance comprises a spring assembly 1 having tubular casing 2 provided with a pivoted end fixing 3 and an end cap 4. A guide rod 6 extends through the end cap 4 and has an end plate 7 retained by a locknut 8 at one end inside the casing 2 and a second clevis end fixing 9. A plurality of disc springs 10 are fitted in the casing 2 between the end plate 7 and the end cap 4. The spring assembly 1 is affixed to a hatch door 11 and to the hatch surround. The hatch door 11 is hinged around a hinge point 14. The spring assembly 1 is tensioned so as to create an opening moment for the hatch door 11 which effectively offsets a portion of the weight of the hatch door 11 and this makes it considerably easier to open. <IMAGE> |
