PURPOSE: To obtain a device capable of forming fiber ends having convergent front end parts of a small width by clamping upper and lower fiber positions, heating a central fiber part and separating the fibers while stretching the fibers by spring force. CONSTITUTION: This device has upper and lower clamps 20, 22 which clamp the optical fiber 18 to upper and lower positions 24, 26 along the fiber. The upper clamp 20 stays still and the lower clamp 33 glides perpendicularly along a pair of perpendicular guides 40, 43. A spring 44 extends from the lower clamp toward a spring loading mechanism 46 for depressing the bottom end of the spring downward. An arc 60 is generated between electrodes 50 and 52 to heat the central part 54 of the fiber in the state of clamping the fiber 18 and holding the spring 44 applied with the downward load. The central part is then elongated and separated to form the two fibers 10A, 62A. Next, the clamp 22 is rise to the position 22A and again the arc 60 is generated. As a result, the finished optical fibers having the desired front end angle A and rounded front end 14 are obtd. |
