PURPOSE:To improve the yield in reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon with hydrogen in the presence of water and a hydrogenation catalyst to give a partial nuclear hydrogenated substance, e.g. cyclohexen, useful as a synthetic raw material, by using the catalyst prepared by utilizing the gelling action of a specific hydrolyzate. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon is reacted with hydrogen gas in the presence of water and a ruthenium copper catalyst dispersed in a silica gel derived from a hydrolyzate of a silicon alkoxide to give a partial nuclear hydrogenated substance, e.g. cyclohexene or alkylcyclohexene. The catalyst to be used in the above-mentioned reaction is obtained by adding water to a solution containing dissolved silicon alkoxide derived from a mono- or polyhydric alcohol, ruthenium compound and copper compound, stirring the solution under heating, drying the resultant gelatinous material under heating to give a silica gel containing the suthenium compound and copper compound uniformly dispersed therein. In use, the catalyst is reduced by the hydrogen gas flow reduction method. |
