The invention relates to a silica gel, a silicon oxynitride glass precursor obtained by nitriding of this gel and a glass obtained by densification of this precursor. The gel of the invention is prepared by a process which comprises hydrolysis of an organosilane compound containing at least one Si-H bond, especially a trialkoxysilane, optionally in a solvent medium. The nitriding of such a gel results in a precursor having a high nitrogen content.
