Method and apparatus for suppressing tinnitus by repositioning the basilar membrane so that the tectorial membrane does not chronically contact the stereocilia of the inner row of hair cells. A preferred mechanism involves the application of a pressure differential to the external ear canal. Preferably, the pressure differential is negative with respect to ambient. Alternatively, a positive pressure may be maintained in the external ear canal and, preferably, statically maintained. Alternative arrangements for repositioning the basilar membrane involve repositioning the ossicles and providing a middle ear pressure either with or without venting to the external ear canal.
|
