PURPOSE:To prevent the illegal use of an automatic transaction machine that is carried out with use of an altered magnetic card by adding a means which read out optically the emboss on the card surface to a reading means which reads out the magnetic stripe information on the card and deciding the genuineness of the card. CONSTITUTION:When the positions of a magnetic card 9 and an optical reading part are relatively changed (shift of an optical system), the photodetecting value of an image sensor 15 is increased on the plane part of the card 9 and decreased on the upper surface and the side surface of an emboss. In other words, only the emboss part is dark and distinct and therefore the emboss can be read out based on the dark/bright image. The emboss of the card 9 and the characters printed on a transferred check 3 which are obtained through the sensor 15 are inputted to a character recognizing part from an image sensor control part and turned into character codes. These card information are supplied to a general deciding part. Thus it is possible to surely prevent an illegal transaction using an altered card. |
