PURPOSE:To improve the display contrast ratio and color reproducibility by specifying the relation between the thickness of a liquid crystal layer and the double refractive index of the liquid crystal material. CONSTITUTION:The pretilt angles thetaR13a, thetaG13b, and thetaB13c of liquid crystal materials of respective color picture elements of red, green, and blue to the surfaces of substrates 1 and 2 are different and an inequality I holds. An equation II holds for the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer and the double refractive index DELTAn of the liquid crystal materials. Consequently, the pretilt angles 13a-13c can be set individually so that the lowest light transmissivity TOFF of each color picture element is obtained; and the display control ratio of the liquid crystal display panel increases and the superior color reproducibility is obtained. |
