The expansible reel (1) comprises a plurality of rigid structural members (2), parallel to each other and to a central axis of the reel, joined at the ends to supports (3) allowing small radial displacements of the members. Between contiguous rigid members (2) there are placed inflatable members (4) into which compressed air is introduced to space apart the rigid members (2) when an optical fibre wound around the reel (1) is to be submitted to tests under controlled tensile stress conditions (Fig.2).
