There are disclosed various derivatives of physostigmine and related compounds of the formula below, <IMAGE> where X, R1, R2 and R3 are as defined in the specification, which compounds are useful for alleviating various memory dysfunctions characterized by a cholinergic deficit such as Alzheimer's disease.
