A compensating device for fitting in a pipe-line or in a wind tunnel may be made in the form of a bellows which can expand or contract in concertina fashion. The device (1) is made from heat resistant fibres coated with plastics and has a flange (2) formed at each end. The flange (2) is formed by cutting longitudinal slots in the wall of the device. These slits extend axially from the end of the wall and enable a flange to be formed by folding the end portion of the wall outwards. The formation of the flanges causes the slits to expand to a V-shape (7). This basic flange (2) is then covered with a ring (8) to provide an even finished surface. USE - Pipe-lines, wind-tunnels.
