To avoid a fire in the ashtray, when paper is ignited by a glowing cigarette, the receiving container for the cigarette ash and the like, which is pivotably mounted in a housing, is provided with a lockable bimetal spring and a tension spring. The bottom of the receiving container and the bottom of the housing are interconnected via the tension spring which draws the receiving container into the closing position when the bimetal spring is released by the heat arising in the case of a fire. In this position of the receiving container, no more air can flow into the container and the fire is extinguished as a result of lack of oxygen.
