Process for the preparation of 2-cyanamino-4,6-dialkoxypyrimidines

2-Cyanamino-4,6-dialkoxypyrimidines of the general formula (I) <IMAGE> in which R represents optionally substituted alkyl are obtained in good yields and high purity by reacting propane-1,3-dicarboximidates of the general formula (II) <IMAGE> or hydrochlorides of compounds of the formula (II) with cyanoiminocarbonates of the general formula (III) <IMAGE> in which R<1> represents in each case optionally substituted alkyl or aryl, at temperatures between 0@C and 130@C, if appropriate in the presence of an acid acceptor and if appropriate in the presence of a diluent. The compounds of the formula (I) can be used as intermediates for the preparation of herbicidal active substances of the sulphonylurea type.
