Water-soluble zinc phosphate glass - for corrosion inhibition, esp. as paint component for use on iron and steel

Glass compsns. comprise major amts. of P2O5 and ZnO and a minor amt. of >=1 Group IIA and/or IIIB metal oxide, the compsn. being such that Zn and PO4 ions go into soln. when the glass comes into contact with water. The glasses pref. contain 52.8.-54.0 mole% ZnO and 46.2-44.2 mole% P2O5, with a ZnO:P2O5 molar ratio of 53:45. The balance is pref. Al2O3. Small amts. of Cr2O3, SnO, Fe2O3, Ga2O3, TiO2 and/or alkali metal oxides can also be present. Paints are pref. produced by dispersing the finely divided glass powder in an acrylic resin, opt. together with pigments. The glasses can be incorporated in concrete or cement to inhibit corrosion of steel reinforcements, or used in solid form to inhibit corrosion of water pipes, etc.
