A fuel pumping apparatus 10 has a throttle (13, Fig. 27) connected intermediate low and high pressure fuel pumps (12 and 11) the latter having outlets 14 connected to the injection nozzles of the engine 15. A secondary liquid is introduced into the fuel flowing to the engine in or adjacent the throttle, the secondary liquid facilitating combustion of the fuel. The secondary liquid is drawn from a tank 20 by a second low pressure pump 21 and flows by way of a control device 24 to the throttle. A non-return valve 23 is provided to prevent flow of fuel towards the low pressure pump 21. The device 24 may be a valve closed at engine overrun or an electronic flow controller. The pump 21 may provide a constant flow and a level sensor in the tank 20 may operate the device 24. <IMAGE>
