4,6-Dimethoxy-2-methylamino-s-triazine, of the formula (I) <IMAGE> (which can be used as an intermediate for the preparation of certain sulphonylurea herbicides) is obtained in very high yield at high purity by reacting a) 4,6-dichloro-2-methylamino-s-triazine, of the formula (II), <IMAGE> with an alkali metal methanolate in methanol at temperatures between 0@C and 60@C, or by reacting b) 2-chloro-4,6-dimethoxy-s-triazine, of the formula (III), <IMAGE> with methylamine, if appropriate in the presence of water and if appropriate in the presence of an organic solvent, at temperatures between 0@C and 100@C.
