In a process for treating residues from, in particular, sewage sludge after drying for a subsequent treatment and/or subsequent use as, e.g. fuel, it is provided that the increase in dry matter in a mechanical dewatering operation is carried out with addition as dewatering aids of those substances which are valuable material in the sense of utilisable products, for example substances having high fatty acid contents and/or highly calorific substances. As a result, a dry matter content can be achieved which is comparable with the achievable dry matter content after digestion/dewatering in the previous procedure so that this can be dispensed with.
