The invention relates to a method for checking components in production or in use for faults to be characterised according to type, magnitude, orientation and position, by means of graphical representation, a primary image being discretised upon entry to form image points of an original image, digitised in an AD conversion into grey levels and subjected thereafter to segmentation and to further processing up to the point of archiving in a data representation system. In order to be able to use such a method on any arbitrary image material serving for the quality control of components, and which is produced by material testing, both destructive and also non-destructive, the invention provides for the image points of the original image to be digitised by at least one bit more than can be reproduced by the data representation system and then, during segmentation, to separate out unimportant image regions with parameters, so that only the important image regions are processed in the data representation system. On the basis of previous examinations, an expert system is established which permits the faults to be detected and to be compared according to type, magnitude, orientation and position. If tolerable fault levels are exceeded, the component is renewed or action is taken in the production process until the cause of the fault is remedied.
