An optical image is focussed on a photoelectrical conversion target of a color image pickup tube through a colour strip filter. It is converted to an electrostratic image which is scanned by an electron beam. A colour demodulator combines the targets output signal with a reference carrier to generate colour signals. A circuit detects frequency variations of a reference signal delivered from a uniformly illuminated target. A read/write circuit writes the frequency variations of one field into a field memory and reads them out. A comparator detects a frequency difference between a variable frequency and phase oscillator and the targets output signal during read mode.
