PURPOSE:To obtain the title sheet material having a surface pressure sufficient to maintain the sealing performance by incorporating aramid fibers as reinforcement and a phenolic resin as binder each in a specified amount into an expanded graphite. CONSTITUTION:3-50 pts.wt. aramid fibers preferably in pulp form is disintegrated into staple fibers in a mixer, evenly mixed with 3-10 pts.wt. finely divided phenolic resin, and then evenly mixed with 100 pts.wt. expanded graphite particles. This mixture is finely ground so as to provide a specific volume of 50ml/g or less and then compressed to form a sheet having an apparent density of about 1. This sheet is heated at 150 deg.C to cure the phenolic resin, thus giving the title sheet material consisting of 100 pts.wt. expanded graphite, 3-50 pts.wt. aramid fibers, and 3-10 pts.wt. phenolic resin. |
