A coffee or tea maker has a base that includes a heater and a fresh water container. The coffee or tea maker also includes a vessel with a filter which in the operating position rests with its supporting flange on the upper edge of the vessel. The inside diameter of the vessel is greater than the outside diameter of the filter above the supporting flange. The fresh water container has a base area that corresponds to the base area of the vessel, and the fresh water container has a vertical height that is sufficient to accommodate the vessel with the filter installed therein in inverted condition.
