Process for short-term preservation of rawhides and skins

The process for the short-term preservation of rawhides and skins with an alkali metal chlorite solution which additionally also contains a compound of the formula 1 <IMAGE> (I) in which R denotes hydrogen or C1-C12-alkyl, Me denotes hydrogen or an alkali metal atom and n denotes 1 or 2. Because of their hydrotropic action, the addition of these compounds improves uniform penetration of the preservation solution into the hide.
