PURPOSE:To obtain a fluoroalcohol which is used as an intermediate of a water- and oil repellent, a surface active agent or a mold release by bringing an iodide corresponding to the objective compound into contact with a nitride salt and water safely without use of dangerous chemicals and heavy metals. CONSTITUTION:An iodide of formula I [Rf is 2-13C fluoroalkyl (n is 1) or fluoroalkylene (n is 2)] is brought into contact with a nitrite salt (preferably an alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt) and water, preferably in an organic solvent to give the objective compound of formula II in high reaction conversion and selectivity in addition to the above-stated advantages. The reaction in the absence of an organic solvent is preferably conducted by bringing the iodide into contact with a nitride salt, a betaine surface active agent, preferably a compound of formula III (R<2> is 1-5 C alkyl; R<3> is 6-24 C alkyl), and water. |
