A heptose is prepd. by (i) reacting glucose with nitromethane in solvent i.e. DMSO in the pressence of base i.e. NaH for 10 hr at room temp. and (ii) Nef rxn.. Thus, add nitromethane 240 mL to anhydrous glucose 100g in DMSO 40mL, add NaH 24g slowly on a stirrer and react for 16 hr at room temp., filter and wash the cake with EtOH, ether and petroleum ether by 2-3 times, dissolve in distd. water, passing the soln. through an Amberlite 1R-120 column and recrystalize in EtOH to give the heptose.
