A device for mfg. a preform of an optical fibre includes a holder for rotatably supporting a reaction tube, a portion for supplying a material through an end of the reaction tube, and a heater which reciprocates in an axial direction of the reaction tube to heating the tube. It further comprises a chamber on the other end of the reaction tube and includes a pressure detector, an inlet and an exhaust port of the gas, and a blower connected to the chamber. It is capable of controlling the pressure of gas introduced in response to detected pressure of the gas in the chamber. This device is suitable for mfr. of a preform of an optical fibre having little variation of outside dia. by MCVD method.
