PURPOSE:To produce unicellular algae having extremely high gamma-aminobutyric acid content by culturing unicellular algae in a specific culture liquid in dark place, adding a nitrogen source to the liquid when the carbon source in the liquid becomes deficient and again culturing the algae. CONSTITUTION:A unicellular alga such as Chlorella and Scenedesmus is cultured in a culture liquid containing an organic carbon source and having pH of 6-8 in an aerobic atmosphere in dark place. When the carbon source in the medium becomes deficient, a nitrogen source such as ammonia, urea or nitric acid is added to the medium while keeping the above pH and aerobic atmosphere and the alga is cultured again. Finally, the cultured product is treated at a low pH state (pH 3-5) preferably in an anaerobic atmosphere. |
