A safety device (10) is wired in series with selected accessories (16) in a wiring circuit for a vehicle. A starter motor (14) is wired in parallel with the accessories so that the starter motor bypasses the safety device (10). The safety device (10) includes a voltmeter (18) wich can detect a predetermined minimum battery voltage, and a circuit breaker (20) which interrupts current to the selected accessories (16) after a predetermined time period if the predetermined minimum voltage is reached. When the engine (30) is running, the breaker (20) is disabled to prevent inadvertent interruption of current to the selected accessories (16). If desired, a manual override switch (22) can be used to bypass the voltmeter (18) and breaker (20) to insure a current supply to the selected accessories (16) in emergency situations. In another embodiment, a programmed microprocessor activates electronic switches to disconnect the battery. |
