The present invention discloses a golf practice mat (1) and a method of practising a golf swing using the mat. The mat has a substantially planar upper surface (2) and is made from porous material such as foamed rubber. The mat is saturated with a liquid such as water and a golf ball (10) is placed on an indicium (6 or 7) located on the upper surface (2). A golf club (11) strikes the mat (1) (either before or after striking the ball (10)) thereby de-watering the upper surface (2) and creating a transient indication (13) on the upper surface (2) of the position and direction of the swing. By observing this transient indication (13) the golfer can detect faults in the positioning and alignment of the swing.
