PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal display element which has low dependence of display contrast on the observation angle and does not produce interference colors by using the liquid crystal display element containing a twisted nematic cell having 150-600nm product of the layer thickness and optical anisotropy▵n of a liquid crystal dielectric material. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal dielectric material is used for a liquid crystal display element consisting of a twisted nematic cell having such feature that the product of the layer thickness and the optical anisotropy▵n of the liquid crystal dielectric material is 150 to 600nm. The optimum property of the display element is obtd. when the product is almost 400nm, namely, in the range from 350 to 450nm. The liquid crystal dielectric material has 0.03 to 0.12, preferably 0.05 to 0.10 optical anisotropy▵n and the layer thickness is 10μm as the limit, preferably 5 to 8μm. When the product of the optical anisotropy▵n and the layer thickness is 150 to 600nm, preferably 200 to 500nm, the display element has small dependence of the contrast on the angle which is far smaller than expected, and the element shows no interference colors. |
