In a method for examining the brakes of vehicles, especially those with four-wheel drive or anti-blocking system, all the wheels (1) of a vehicle (7) which can be driven and/or braked are arranged respectively on a pair of rolls (11, 35) and the separation of the rolls (17, 19; 37, 39) from each other is varied continuously to vary the torque transmittable from the wheels (1) to the pairs of rolls. The rotational speed of the wheels (1) and of the rolls (17, 19; 37, 39) is detected. By this means, vehicles with an anti-blocking system can be tested rapidly and simply, and it is also possible to test vehicles with permanent four-wheel drive. Furthermore, a device is provided which is suitable for carrying out the method. <IMAGE>
