A device for detecting signal characteristics in the ignition system of an internal combustion engine with more than one ignition coil (10, 11, 12) is proposed. The signal voltages which occur at switching terminals (17, 18, 19) of the ignition coils (10, 11, 12) are connected with isolating diodes (24, 25, 26; 29, 30, 31) to a common output (28) at which a composite signal can be tapped off. A switch (58) divides the closing signals passed on via the diodes (29, 30, 31) from the output (28) when the voltage at at least one switching terminal (17, 18, 19) exceeds a reference voltage. <IMAGE>
