A process for producing carbon mesophases or products of the carbon mesophase-type, such as mesophase pitches from bituminous coal tars or bituminous coal tar pitches, petroleum pitches, aromatics or similar precursors is described, wherein the polynuclear aromatics, capable of forming mesophases, are formed in a continuously operated, fully backmixed stirred kettle reactor (mesophase reactor), i.e. at constant temperature and constant concentration, the precursor or precursors is or are continuously fed in the liquid form and the mesophase or the product of the mesophase-type is likewise taken off continuously in the liquid form. The pressure in the mesophase reactor is in every case above the surrounding pressure. The temperature in the mesophase reactor is at least 300 and at most 600@C. The liquid product taken off from the mesophase reactor passes into at least one further series-connected, continuously operated and fully backmixed stirred-kettle reactor (conditioning reactor) in which the adjustment of the desired average molecular weight or of the desired softening point is accomplished by a further temperature treatment. As a result of this reaction sequence, the process has extraordinary flexibility with respect to the precursor, pressure, temperature, residence time and the application of reactive gas atmospheres or catalysts.
