Method and apparatus for setting a preselected sweeping level of a revolving brush which is rotatable about an axis and is intended for cleaning surfaces, such as roads, runways or the like, wherein the distance between the axis of the revolving brush and the surface to be cleaned is altered to set the sweeping level, and wherein to measure the desired distance the brush diameter is measured by means of a sensor device and the distance of the axis from the surface to be cleaned is set in accordance with the brush diameter. In addition to the determination of the brush diameter, provision is made for the actual distance between the axis and the surface to be cleaned to be measured. In the event of deviations of the desired distance from the actual distance, a readjustment of the distance of the axis to the desired distance is carried out with the aid of an adjusting arrangement, in order to ensure that a preselected sweeping level is maintained.
