PURPOSE:To prevent a starter from rupture by a method wherein, in a device which starts an engine and an automatic speed change gear by means of an engine starter, the rotation state of an automatic speed change gear is detected, based on a detecting result therefrom, an engine starting action is rendered ineffective by means of a starter. CONSTITUTION:When an ignition switch 3 is turned ON, an armature shaft 7 of a starter 6 is rotated, a pinion 10 is moved in the direction of an arrow mark 23 as it is rotated. Through engagement of the pinion 10 with a ring gear 2, an engine is cranked. When, through running of the engine 1, an automatic speed change gear 5a is started to rotated, a line pressure 13 is generated to move forward a shaft part 16b of a piston 16 of a hydraulic actuator 22 to an actuating position 16A, and when the movement is detected by means of a sensor 20, a display lamp 21 is lighted ON. Even when, with this state, an ignition switch 3 is erroneously switched ON, since the piston shaft part 16b is moved forward to an actuating position 16A, movement of the pinion 10 is blocked. |
