This device includes: - means 4 for mounting the device on the forks 1 of a fork-lift vehicle provided with means for separating the forks, and; - grasping jaws 5 secured to the forks by these mounting means, these jaws being in the shape of a circular arc of the same diameter of that of the barrels to be lifted, so as to allow them to be applied against the wall of the barrel by bringing the forks of the lifting vehicle together, 3, these jaws being applied under a rib of the barrel so as to allow the barrel, retained by this rib, to be lifted up by raising 2 the forks of the lifting vehicle. Also provided are: - means 7, 8, 9, 10 for limiting the separation of the jaws to a minimal value corresponding to the diameter of the barrel, so as to prevent the latter from being crushed by the jaws being moved together excessively, and; - buffer means 11 acting in a direction perpendicular to the direction for bringing the forks together, so as to centre the barrel coaxially to the jaws by its wall coming into abutment against these buffer means. <IMAGE>
